Why an Instagram Professional Account Is Required

Updated

LinkToDM cannot automate a personal Instagram account. Neither can any other tool, and the reason is not a limitation we chose.

Automation runs on an API, not on your login

Section titled “Automation runs on an API, not on your login”

LinkToDM does not sign in as you and click around Instagram. It talks to Meta’s official messaging API, which is the supported and policy-compliant way to send DMs and read comments on someone’s behalf.

That API is only available to Business and Creator accounts. Meta does not expose messaging or comment permissions on personal accounts at all, so there is nothing for LinkToDM to connect to. An automation built on a personal account would have no way to see a comment arrive or to send a reply.

Switching to a professional account is free, takes about a minute in the Instagram app, and does not change your handle, your followers or your posts.

A personal account is a person. A professional account is a business or a public figure who has accepted a different set of platform rules, including the ones covering automated messaging, rate limits and what may be sent in a DM.

Automated messaging is only permitted under that agreement. Tying the API to professional accounts is how Meta keeps automation inside a set of terms someone has actually agreed to, and how it can act against an account that abuses it.

  • Business and Creator both work. Pick whichever fits — Creator suits personal brands, Business suits shops and companies.
  • The account must stay professional. Switching back to personal cuts the connection, and your automations will stop.
  • Being professional is necessary but not always sufficient: the Facebook login path also wants a linked Page, and some accounts are held back by other eligibility checks. See Why a Facebook Page is required and Instagram Messaging API Error.
