Fix 'The Account Owner Has Disabled Access to Instagram Direct Messages'
“The account owner has disabled access to Instagram direct messages” is one of the tidier Instagram errors, because it names exactly what’s wrong and there’s a single switch behind it.
Your Instagram account has Allow access to messages turned off. That switch governs whether any third-party tool may read or send your DMs. With it off, LinktoDM’s connection is otherwise healthy — permissions granted, account eligible, automations published — and every message still fails.
Turn message access back on
Section titled “Turn message access back on”The setting lives in the Instagram mobile app, not on the web.
- Open Instagram and go to Settings and activity.
- Tap Messages and story replies (on some versions: Privacy → Messages).
- Find Connected tools and open it.
- Switch Allow access to messages on.
Instagram sometimes takes a little while to propagate the change to connected apps. If automations are still failing after a few minutes, force the update from the LinktoDM side:
- Log out of LinktoDM.
- Log back in and reconnect Instagram, approving every permission — Connect your Instagram account has the flow.
Then comment your trigger word from a second account and confirm the DM arrives.
Why it switches itself off
Section titled “Why it switches itself off”You probably didn’t turn it off deliberately. Three things flip it:
- A password change or a security checkpoint. Instagram revokes third-party message access when it re-secures an account — see Reconnect Instagram after a password change.
- Switching the account type back to Personal and then to Professional again. The switch resets to off.
- Removing and re-adding an app without approving the messaging permission on the way through.
Still failing after switching it on
Section titled “Still failing after switching it on”If the error survives both the setting and a reconnection, the account may be carrying a restriction rather than a setting. Check the Messaging API eligibility list, then contact support@linktodm.com with your username and the time of a failed send.
