A Post Thumbnail Won't Load
The post picker or the automation’s preview shows a grey box where the image should be. The good news first: this is almost always cosmetic. The automation is bound to the post’s ID, not its picture, so a missing thumbnail doesn’t stop anything from triggering.
Why thumbnails go blank
Section titled “Why thumbnails go blank”Instagram serves media through CDN URLs that expire after a period. LinktoDM displays the URL Instagram gave it when the post was fetched; once that link lapses, the image stops loading while everything else about the post stays valid.
That’s why older automations lose their previews first, and why the picker often looks fine for recent posts and patchy further down.
Get the previews back
Section titled “Get the previews back”Refresh the page. LinktoDM re-fetches the post list, Instagram issues fresh URLs, and the images return. This fixes most cases.
Check the post still exists. A post that was deleted or archived on Instagram has no thumbnail to serve — and unlike an expired URL, this one does matter: the automation attached to it can no longer trigger. Open the post on Instagram to confirm, and repoint the automation if it’s gone.
Reconnect if every thumbnail is blank. All previews missing across every account usually means the connection can’t read your media at all — refresh permissions via Instagram automation not working.
Try another browser. An ad blocker or strict tracking protection blocking Instagram’s CDN domain will hide thumbnails and nothing else. An incognito window tells you in seconds.
The one case that isn’t cosmetic
Section titled “The one case that isn’t cosmetic”In a story automation, the story picker showing “No story · Add a story and try again” is not a loading failure — it means no story is currently live on the account. Instagram stories expire after 24 hours, and the picker only reads live ones. Post a story and reopen the picker, or point the automation at all stories or next story instead.
