Public Comment Replies Temporarily Restricted

Updated

Your DMs are going out but the public replies under comments have stopped, or Instagram is returning “based on previous use of this feature”.

This is Instagram’s anti-spam system, and it’s account-level rather than automation-level. Something about the volume, speed or sameness of your replies crossed a threshold, and Instagram has paused that ability for a while.

Four things, usually in combination:

  • Volume in a short window. A post that takes off produces hundreds of qualifying comments in minutes, and every one gets a public reply.
  • Identical text. A hundred comments answered with the exact same sentence is the clearest possible spam signature.
  • Links in public replies. A URL repeated under every comment attracts attention far faster than plain text.
  • A young or recently reconnected account. New professional accounts have less headroom than established ones.

Stop replying while it’s restricted. Switch the automation’s public reply off — or pause the automation — for a day or two. Continuing to push against a restriction extends it; that’s the whole design.

The DM half can keep running. Public replies and private replies are separate capabilities, so disabling the public reply while you wait doesn’t stop the automation delivering.

Restrictions are temporary and lift on their own. There is no appeal, no support ticket that shortens it, and no setting that raises the limit.

Cap the replies. Set a reply limit on the automation so it stops after a set number instead of running unbounded on a post that unexpectedly performs. This is the single most effective control.

The Public comment reply row carries both the on/off toggle and the per-post limit

Never send the same sentence twice. Write several public replies and let them rotate, or use AI public replies so every reply is a fresh sentence. Rotation is not cosmetic here — it’s the difference between looking like a person and looking like a script.

Keep links out of the public reply. Put the URL in the DM, where it belongs and where it converts better anyway. “Sent you a DM 📩” is a better public reply than a link.

Don’t backtrack a big post in one go. Backtracking a week of comments creates the exact volume spike this restriction watches for.
