Links Aren't Clickable in an Automated DM

The DM arrives, the URL is in it, and it renders as plain text nobody can tap. This is Instagram’s rendering rather than a LinktoDM fault — but how you build the message decides how often it happens.

Use a button, not a bare URL

The most reliable way to deliver a link is a button. Buttons are a native message type: Instagram renders them as tappable controls, they aren’t subject to the app’s text link-detection, and they look deliberate rather than pasted.

Switch the message layout to text with buttons or an image card with buttons, give the button a label of up to 20 characters, and put the URL behind it. Buttons render and work on the Instagram mobile apps and on instagram.com in a desktop browser alike, so a button-only message is safe to send whatever your audience reads DMs on.

If you’re sending a bare URL

Put the URL on its own line, with a blank line above it. Instagram’s link-detection is more reliable when the URL isn’t wrapped in punctuation or buried mid-sentence. This is the single most effective fix for the Android app, which is markedly worse at detecting inline links than iOS.

Drop the trailing punctuation. A full stop or closing bracket immediately after a URL frequently gets absorbed into it, producing a link that 404s or doesn’t register at all.

Include the protocol. https://example.com detects reliably; example.com often doesn’t.

Avoid shorteners that look suspicious. Some redirect domains are treated warily. A custom domain or the real URL is safer.

If it’s not clickable for some people

They haven’t accepted the message request. A DM from an account someone doesn’t follow lands in Message requests, where the content is limited until they accept. Getting them to interact first is what fixes this, and that’s what an opener message is for: a greeting with a button, and the real link only after they’ve tapped. This solves link delivery and message-request burial in one move.

If links are blocked entirely

Instagram sometimes restricts an account from sending URLs. If every DM with a link fails while the same message without one goes through, that’s what’s happening. Send link-free messages for a day or two, keep the volume down, and let the restriction lapse. It’s the same anti-spam system described in public replies temporarily restricted.
