If you create content on Instagram, you've probably heard, or said, some version of this:
"In my previous Reel, I talked about X, Y, and Z. But so many of you asked about A, B, and C…"
You posted a Reel about one thing. Your comment section asked about everything else:
"What's the price of that kurta?"
"Where did you get that watch?"
"Can you send me the link to those earrings?"
By the time you notice, those questions are hours or days old and buried under newer comments. So the usual fix is a second Reel that answers them.
But think about that for a moment.
You already made the Reel. The comments are already there. Why make another Reel just to answer them?
What if you could create an Instagram comment automation for that existing Reel and backtrack the comments you missed?
You Don't Need a Second Reel to Answer Missed Instagram Comments
With LinktoDM, you can create an automation for an existing Instagram post or Reel, use AI Intent Match to identify the questions you care about, and use Backtracking to check eligible comments that were already posted.
A follow-up Reel only works if the same people happen to see it. The people who asked about the watch asked under your original Reel, and that's where they expect an answer.
So instead of creating another video and hoping it reaches the same audience, you respond to the conversations already happening under the one you made. Backtracked public replies are threaded under the original comment, so the answer shows up exactly where the question was asked.
How to Backtrack Missed Instagram Comments
Automating comments on an existing Instagram Reel takes three steps.
Step 1: Create an automation
Choose the existing Instagram Reel or post and create your comment to DM automation. It doesn't matter that the Reel is already live and already has comments.
Step 2: Add AI Intent Match
Pick Intent Match as the trigger and describe what you want to detect in one plain sentence.
For example:
"When someone asks about the accessories shown or worn in this Reel."
Then customize the public reply and the DM you want to send, such as the product link, the price, or the details people asked for. Publish the automation and switch it on.
Step 3: Backtrack the comments
In your Automations list, open the menu next to the automation, choose Backtrack comments, and click Backtrack Now.
LinktoDM checks eligible previous comments against the automation's trigger, including the AI Intent Match, and responds to the relevant ones. Comments that don't match are left alone.
That's it.
- No second Reel.
- No manually hunting through hundreds of comments.
- No hoping the people who asked will somehow find your follow-up video.
What Responding to Old Instagram Comments Automatically Looks Like
Say your outfit Reel picked up 200 comments over the weekend. Most are compliments and emojis, but a few dozen people asked about the watch, the earrings, and the bag.
You set up one automation on Monday morning and run a backtrack. LinktoDM goes through the eligible comments, skips the compliments, and replies to the people who asked about the accessories. Each of them gets the reply under their own comment and the details in their DMs.
The same applies if you run a small business. If you promoted a handbag and customers kept asking about the sunglasses next to it, you don't need a new post to answer them. You need an automation on the post where they asked.
The Two Features Behind It
AI Intent Match
AI Intent Match helps you recognize what people mean, even when they don't use the same words.
"Watch link?"
"Where is that watch from?"
"Can you send me the watch details?"
Different wording. Similar intent.
A keyword trigger only fires when someone types your exact word, and real comment sections rarely cooperate. Intent Match works on meaning, so it also handles casual phrasing and mixed-language comments like Hinglish.
Backtracking
An automation normally sees only the comments that arrive after you publish it. Backtracking lets you apply it to eligible comments that were posted before you set it up.
AI Intent Match finds the relevant intent. Backtracking finds the conversations you already missed.
Before You Backtrack
Three things to know before you run it:
- Comments older than 7 days aren't eligible. If a Reel took off earlier this week, backtrack it sooner rather than later.
- The automation has to be published and switched on. A draft has no trigger to run.
- Your reply limits still apply. Backtracked replies count toward them like any other reply, and one run per post is enough.
